The error occurs when "virt-v2v" command is executed

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When a guest OS is migrated from VMware to KVM by using "virt-v2v" command, the following error message is displayed and the migration fails.
# virt-v2v -f /etc/virt-v2v.conf -ic esx://<IP or Host name on VMware>/?no_verify=1 -os guest_images_disk <Guest name>
virt-v2v: Failed to create storage volume: libvirt error code: 27, message: XML error: unknown volume format type raw
  • It is ok to add new volumes in pool with disk type, however, it can not handle to add volume with raw format.
  • virt-v2v use the raw format with disk type, so the migration fails.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • virt-v2v
  • VMware ESX 3.5
