pkg-config issues with shell metacharacters escaping

pkg-config since some time does escape shell meta characters, which causes issues with paths containing them on UNIX

Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linex 7
pkgconfig
home grown .pc files, with paths containing for example !, but more chacarcters are affected
