RHEL 6: listing files in a directory on an NFS filesystem is quick the first time, but slow the second and subsequent times

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

When listing the files in a directory on an NFS filesystem, if there are a lot of files in the directory, the first 'ls' will complete quickly, but the second and subsequent 'ls' commands will perform significantly slower.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (NFS client)
    • NFS filesystems with large number of files in directories
    • kernel prior to kernel-2.6.32-573.el6
