Guest rebooted instead of being powered off with Watchdog device configuration action set to 'poweroff'.

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Environment

Red Hat Enterpise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.x

Issue

  • Configured Watchdog on a guest with model i6300esb and action equal to poweroff.
  • Guest has the High Availability box checked.
  • Guest interrupted with a panic and instead of powering off, it reboots.

Resolution

RHEV-M has the capability to configure individual guest for Highly Available (HA), meaning that in the event of a host failure, the guest will be rebooted on an alternate hypervisor host. A guest that is configured as Highly Available (HA) then the Watchdog action will be overridden by the Highly Available (HA) guest restart capabilities.

Root Cause

  • According to the Watchdog feature documentation, a guest will automatically restart if it is configured as High Availability (HA).
