Unregistered disks are not accessible after importing storage domain via RHEV UI

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Trying to create a replica of Storage Domain that contains non-OS VMs disks only, by importing that domain into another RHEV environment.

  • However, after the import the disks are not visible on RHEV UI under disks tab.

  • Checking on the SPM host, the disks are still available on the imported domain and present under /rhev/data-center.

  • Why those disks are unavailable in RHEV UI?

  • Another scenario in which this can happen is if a Storage Domain is removed and then re-added to the same RHEV environment and this Storage Domain contains one of several disks that belong to a VM. When the Storage Domain is removed, the disk(s) in that Storage Domain will be removed from the VM. When the Storage Domain is re-attached, the only option via the RHEV Admin Portal is to import the entire VM, which will fail as it already exists. One option here might be to detach the existing disk(s) from the VM, remove the VM, import the VM from the previously-re-attached Storage Domain, and then re-attach the disk(s) that were just detached. The only "problem" with this is if any of the existing disks contain snapshots. If they do, those disks cannot be detached. So, using the API will allow the "missing" disk(s) to be imported, and then they can be attached to the VM.
