Why did the Inode number change, but file name and it's contents remain the same on a VFAT file system?

Issue

  • The intrusion detection system identified that the inode number of a file was changed, however it's contents remain the same.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • VFAT filesystem
