Concerns about "Beta" in the RPM Release tag of "xz" and "xz-libs" in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

It makes our customers (and me) nervous if packages have Beta in their version or release tag. The latest RHEL5-version(s) of rpm-build and xen-libs have dependencies to "xz" and "xz-libs". Therefore we are forced to install these packages. Why did Red Hat decide to use a Beta-release tag and what are the consequences?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • xz-4.999.9-0.3.beta.20091007git.el6
  • xz-libs-4.999.9-0.3.beta.20091007git.el6
