Second Hyper-v disk is recognised as a multipathed device

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

With kernel 2.6.32-504.3.3 (RHEL6.6) and 3.10.0-210 (RHEL7.0) the second disk of a Hyper-V virtual machine, is delivered to the OS through 8 paths. As a consequence, it is erroneously configured as a device-mapper-multipath device.
This is the case for the following configurations, and possibly also in other scenarios:

  • The first disk is an IDE disk, the second disk is SCSI
  • The first disk is SCSI, the second disk is IDE

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6 with kernel 2.6.32-504.3.3
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 with kernel 3.10.0-210
  • Hyper-V 2.0 / Windows 2008 R2 SP1
