Weblogic connection requests to Oracle RAC fail intermittently on timeouts

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Itermittent Weblogic connection requests failing on timeouts to an Oracle RAC (Active/Standby)11.2.0.3, Database seems to become irresponsive to new connection requests.
  • When this happens Weblogic will reconnect to the Oracle RAC Standby instance, turning it into an active causing further performance issues as the application will not perform well on an active/active Oracle RAC environment (Oracle RAC serves mostly for HA purposes).

Environment

  • Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.7
    • HP DL980/64 512 GB RAM
      • Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3
      • Weblogic 11
      • RAC interconnect and all network is 10 GbE
  • Customer runs a high volume batch job every 10 minutes connecting to the database through Weblogic servers which are distributed over several servers.
