Apache httpd is running out of MaxClients limit when configured to send access logs to a remote syslog server

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have configured Apache httpd to send Apache httpd logs to remote syslog server and observed that frequently Apache httpd will hung and following message shown in error_log.
[info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 8 children, there are 4 idle, and 141 total children
[error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • 6.5
  • ARCSIGHT LOGGER
  • Apache httpd server
    • 2.2.15
