VMWare system locked up but recovered when console opened

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • We have a RHEL 6.6 virtual machine running on VMWare vSphere 5.5.0 that locked up last night. The CPU and memory spiked at approximately 10pm. We were unable to ssh to the machine (networking was locked). We opened a console session and were able to log in. As soon as we opened the console, the network came back online. It's as if opening the console kicked the machine back to life. VMware have reported that the system has been in both suspended and not suspended states when this has occurred.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6
  • RHEL 6.5 kernel 2.6.32-431.el6
  • VMWare 5.5.0
  • RHEL SAP Services
