LVM not cleaning up cow device file symlinks.

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • We're using LVM snapshots with autoextend enabled on RHEL6.6 servers for backup purposes. We've recently discovered that it is leaving behind broken symlinks related to those snapshots in the /dev/mapper directory. After a short period of time, the number of broken symlinks in this directory becomes quite large, All symlinks end in -cow (copy on write).

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4+
  • LVM
