Setting maxlogins in /etc/security/limits.conf fails to clean /var/run/utmp in RHEL 6

Issue

  • When maxlogins is configured in /etc/security/limits.conf, the system fails to cleanup /var/run/utmp. This prevents users that do not have any processes open on the system from logging in.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • pam
