Why does ntpd not start automatically in RHEL 7?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • NTP sync issue on RHEL 7
  • I have a problem with ntpd, it does not start automatically, when the system boots.
  • On RHEL 7, ntp was installed, started, and set to Enable on boot. Right now, ntpd is working but, upon reboot, it did not start automatically:

    # systemctl status ntpd
    ntpd.service - Network Time Service
       Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/ntpd.service; enabled)
       Active: inactive (dead)

  • We are seeing that ntpd.service is misbehaving. When we restart it, it comes UP and abruptly goes down with no apparent pattern to it.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • ntp
  • chrony
