RHEL6: inconsistent behavior with chgrp and setuid / setgid bits on files

Issue

  • RHEL6.5 has inconsistent behavior with chgrp and setuid / setgid bits. A chgrp on file clears setuid bit, but chgrp does not clear setgid bit.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
    • seen on RHEL6.5, at least kernel 2.6.32-431.32.1.el6
  • NFS or ext4 filesystem (other filesystems likely affected)
