resize2fs fails with "Input/output error While trying to extend the last group" in RHEL 6

Issue

  • When I run resize2fs I get an error "Input/ouput error While trying to extend the last group", and the resulting file system is still the same size it was before
  • I extend a volume group and logical volume but resize2fs doesn't extend the file system
resize2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006)
Filesystem at /dev/myVG/lv1 is mounted on /mnt/lv1; on-line resizing required
Performing an on-line resize of /dev/myVG/lv1 to 3919096832 (4k) blocks.
