Why is the first hop reported by traceroute not the expected first hop such as the host's default gateway?

Issue

The output of a traceroute test does not show the default gateway as the first hop. There are no other static routes on the system.
Is there something in traceroute that is causing the default gateway to not be reported in the output? If so, how can this be changed?
Is the traceroute program is reliable to validate the first-hop in route?
