Issue

Is the Realtek RTS5227 card reader supported on my laptop running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5?

Resolution

Support for the Realtek RTS5227 card reader in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 requires a Driver Update Program (DUP) package. Please see the Red Hat Knowledgebase article entitled “Where can I download Driver Update Program (DUP) disks?”, which can be viewed at the following link, to learn how to download DUP packages:

https://access.redhat.com/articles/64322

The package that corrects this problem is called dd-rtsx-0.1-signed-x86_64.iso.

This DUP package cannot be used at install time as the drivers are new and Anaconda, the installer in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, cannot identify and install them. To work around this issue, the drivers must be installed manually. Here are the steps to follow to install the driver:

1) Download the ISO package as explained in the knowledgebase article above.

2) As root, mount the ISO file in a temporary directory:

# mount -o loop dup_package_iso_file.iso /mnt/tmp

3) Change into the directory where the RPM files are kept:

# cd /mnt/tmp/rpms/x86_64

4) Install all six RPM files that are there:

# yum install *.rpm

5) When installation completes, manually load the card reader driver or reboot the system to have it loaded automatically:

# modprobe rtsx_pci_sdmmc

or

# reboot

Unmount the ISO file if you did not reboot:

# cd
# umount /mnt/tmp

6) Insert SD cards as needed.

An error message may appear in /var/log/messages the first time a card is loaded after each system boot. Please see Red Hat Knowledgebase article at the following link for more information:
