xfs_check reports "out of memory" when trying to check a very large filesystem for errors

Issue

  • When running xfs_check on an XFS filesystem the following error is received:
# xfs_check /dev/vgname/lvname
xfs_check: out of memory

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Device formatted with XFS
