RHEL does not run on a server without a power source attached

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Issue

  • The operating system fails to run when power is removed from the computer.
  • If the power cable is removed from the back of the system, the screen blanks and the OS no longer responds, including external peripherals.
  • Attaching the power cable back to the machine allows the OS to boot back up and run as expected

Resolution

1. Identify the PSU (Power Supply Unit) on the back of the system

2. Verify that the power cable is no longer plugged into the socket

3. Insert power cable into socket

Note: The power cable will need to be attached to a power source

Possible Workaround
Install a backup PSU and do not remove the power cable.

Root Cause

  • Removing the power cable from the PSU causes the hardware to ungracefully shut down
  • This is considered expected behavior from a Red Hat perspective.

Diagnostic Steps

Check server PSU socket to verify it has been attached to a power source
