Open External Configuration File

We are using JBoss EAP 6.1.0, and we are trying to open a file using Apache Commons configuration from outside our EAR file, ideally from our standalone/configuration/ directory.

We have tried looking for the file in ${jboss.server.config.dir} but it does not seem to work.
