Losing video console after setting up serial console

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5

Issue

  • On dell r320 which is set to use UEFI. It has the latest idrac7 firmware. Video console was working fine until setup the serial console for the idrac. Now video works until the OS just starts to load and an initrd message is displayed.
  • If remove entries from grub.conf the virtual console works fine. After looking at dmesg the efifb is not initializing when grub.conf contains the serial changes. It initializes correctly once the serial changes are removed from grub.conf.

Resolution

Diagnostic Steps

  • Dell suggested using the directions in this link to configure things.
  • To set it up refer the redhat support area KCS
  • Followed the above instructions for the most part. Just changed speed and port settings. It is a bug #1048681. If remove entries from grub.conf the virtual console works fine. After looking at dmesg the efifb is not initializing when grub.conf contains the serial changes. It initializes correctly once the serial changes are removed from grub.conf.
