When does the DNS resolver not try to use all searchdomain domains that are specified in /etc/resolv.conf ?

Issue

  • When specifying multiple searchdomain parameters in /etc/resolv.conf then the DNS resolver should try to use all of these DNS domains to resolve a host. Why is the resolver apparently only trying to resolve with the first searchdomain, and while host.first.search.domain does not exist he is not trying to lookup host in the further searchdomains?
  • When specifying multiple searchdomain parameters in /etc/resolv.conf then utilies depending on bind-lib are not able to attempt lookups for all searchdomain parameters while utilities depending on GLIBC for resolving use all searchdomain parameters. Why is that?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), several versions
