Apache Web server is not following symlinks: AH00037: Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible

Issue

  • I have set up a soft link in /var/www/html to a file in a different location. However, when trying to access the page I get the following error:
AH00037: Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/www/html/index.html

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
    • httpd 2.2.15
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
    • httpd 2.4.6
