Running 'ls' on a filesystem hangs

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

Issue

  • When running 'ls' against a filesystem, say /opt, it hangs

Resolution

  • Unmount the NFS share that was mounted to a subdirectory of the filesystem.

Root Cause

  • Running ls on /opt was hanging due to an NFS share being mounted to `/opt/directory'

Diagnostic Steps

  • Capture strace of ls.
  • Strace shows it hanging on as soon as it hit the NFS mounted share.
