How can I properly re-align filesystems on un-aligned partitions or LVM devices?
Issue
- Some of our RHEL5 servers were installed with unaligned partitions. We are seeing significant IO performance penalty on these, when compared to servers which are built with partitions aligned.
- How can I fix partitions to be aligned?
- How to modify the partition offset value to resolve disk IO performance
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL)
- Filesystems are not aligned to storage requirements, causing block-sized writes to span multiple on-disk segments.
- Partition tables, LVM and other on-disk metadata may be involved.
