Issue
E-mail bounced back with following error message when sending mails to some domains.
553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts
The following message was seen in maillog at the same time.
<span id="UpdateSR"><span id="SRDetailsSubTabRN"><span id="SRHistoryTabxRN"><span id="SRLogxRN"><span id="ActivityTextFLRN_6__95"><span class="x4" id="NoteDetailText_2__95">Nov 12 09:05:36 mailrelay sendmail[9796]: nACH5X05009789:to=<xxx@xxx.com>, delay=00:00:03, xdelay=00:00:01,<br />mailer=esmtp, pri=98903, relay=mail.xxx.com. [xx.xxx.xxx.xxx],dsn=5.1.3, stat=User unknown</span></span></span></span></span></span>
Nslookup for xxx.com resolves fine.
Diagnostic Steps
The bounced error '553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts' mainly due to two reasons:
-
The domain name contained in the email address ie the domain name being sent to is not full propagated yet.
-
Improper settings of the mail client [thunderbird, outlook etc..] .
Since nslookup of xxx.com resolves xxx.com, check the following details:
-
Whether nslookup command was executed at the same time when the mail bounced back with 553 error
-
Whether there is any temporary DNS issues with xxx.com
-
Whether sending mail from command line works properly. [This will isolate if the issue is with email client settings]
-
Send a test mail to xxx.com from command line, attach the sysreport and maillog with the details of test email address and time stamp
