Unable to boot and install RHEL5 on Cisco USC C240 M3 hardware

Issue

  • I'm trying to install RHEL5.9 using standard CD on Cisco C240M3
  • This machine has 512GB memory so I had supplied mem=16GB during boot
  • However, the installation stopped at
    • RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.
    • ... few other lines ...
    • kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,1)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.9 or higher
  • Cisco Systems C240 M3
  • Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v2 CPU
