Fencing with 'pcs stonith fence', 'stonith_admin', or in natural fence events presents an error of "No such device" in a RHEL 6 or 7 High Availability cluster with pacemaker

Issue

  • When I run pcs stonith fence <node>, I get "Command failed: No such device"
# pcs stonith fence node1.example.com
Error: unable to fence 'node1.example.com'
Command failed: No such device
  • stonith_admin fails with "No such device"
  • When my cluster attempts to fence a node, the logs show "No such device" errors

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6, 7, 8 and 9 with the High Availability Add-On
  • pacemaker
