Editing VCPU value with virsh edit does not add VCPUs to KVM guest

Issue

Running virsh edit guestname and editing the <vcpu> value does not result in more processors seen under /proc/cpuinfo in a virtual guest, even after an init 6 reboot.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or 6
  • KVM hypervisor
