Why /etc/mtab file permissions changed to 600 unexpectedly on a GFS2 filesystem on RHEL 5 or RHEL 6?

Issue

  • Every time we collect data using a sosreport, /etc/mtab permissions get changed and users are no longer allowed to df.
  • The file /etc/mtab permissions change from 644 to 600 unexpectedly.
  • Unable to stat mounted or filesystem size when using GFS2.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server(RHEL) 5 (with the High Availability and Resilient Storage Add Ons)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server(RHEL) 6 (with the High Availability and Resilient Storage Add Ons)
  • A Global Filesystem 2(GFS2)
