'reposync' utility is failing with timeout messages.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • reposync

Issue

  • reposync utility on registered system is failing with the below mentioned error message:
[root@aladke Desktop]# reposync --gpgcheck -l --repoid=channel-id
Loaded plugins: product-id, refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin
There was an error communicating with RHN.
RHN channel support will be disabled.
Error communicating with server. The message was:
timed out

Resolution

  • Check network connectivity and confirm the system has access to:

    • xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com on port 80 (http)
    • xmlrpc.rhn.redhat.com on port 443 (https)

  • If you can't open your network and use RHN classic you can disable location aware updates as a workaround.

Root Cause

  • Http Proxy was not allowing connection to RHN.
