After upgrading to RHEL 5.9 sockets are staying in the TIME_WAIT state for longer

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • too many time-wait message "timewait (0.00/0/0)" after changing kernel from 2.6.18-308.EL5 to 2.6.18-348.EL5. When timewait expires, after 20s and 4-50s, each time-wait session was cleaned up completely.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9
    • kernel-2.6.18.348
      • /etc/sysctl.conf
        • net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle = 0
        • net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 1
