Is it safe to use -o nobarrier mount option in a virtual guest?

Issue

  • We'd like to decide whether to recommend -o nobarrier option . It is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 as a guest on a physical server connected to a storage with battery-backed caches.

      Q1. What problem happens if nobarrier option is specified?
      Q2. Please let us know occurring conditions of the problem
    

    Also whether the problem occurs in the following Environment.

    • RHEL 6.4 for the guest OS on ESXi.
    • Physical server is connected to a storage with battery-backed caches.
    • virtual disks configurations
      • Guest OS system data on VMDK files on ESXi data store
      • DB data shared by multiple guests by Raw Device Mapping on a storage with battery-backed caches.
