rsync fails with "Too many levels of symbolic links" when destination path contains shared symlinks or NFS/AFS

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • After updating to rsync-3.1.3-28.el8_10, transferring files to a destination directory fails if a parent component of the destination path is a symbolic link.
  • The transfer fails before any files are copied, returning an ELOOP error:

rsync: change_dir#1 "/path/to/dest" failed: Too many levels of symbolic links (40)
rsync error: errors selecting input/output files, dirs (code 3) at main.c(635) [Receiver=3.1.3]

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
  • rsync-3.1.3-28.el8_10
