Network interface renamed with "_bkp" suffix and connectivity lost after VM migration from VMware using MTV

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After migrating a Linux virtual machine from VMware to OpenShift Virtualization using MTV, the guest VM loses network connectivity and is unreachable.
  • When accessing the console, the network interface is found to be renamed with a _bkp suffix (e.g., ens192_bkp instead of the original ens192).
  • Inspecting the virt-v2v conversion logs for the migration pod reveals errors similar to the following:

    grep: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens192
    /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens192_bkp: No such file or directory
    ...
    New udev rule:
    SUBSYSTEM=="net",ACTION=="add",ATTR{address}=="xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx",NAME="ens192_bkp"

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 4.x
  • OpenShift Virtualization 4.x
  • Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV) 2.11.x
