VM Fails to Boot After Restore: Errors with `padlock` and `piix4_smbus` Modules

Issue

  • After restoring a VM from backup (following a disk corruption or HDD failure), the system fails to boot and displays errors related to the padlock and piix4_smbus kernel modules.

Error:
* Boot hangs or errors visible related to:

  • padlock: VIA PadLock not detected
  • piix4_smbus: SMBus base address uninitialized
    • VM does not reach login prompt or root shell
    • Kernel trace or module loading failure observed in console output

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 / 8 / 9
  • Virtual Machine (KVM, VMware, Hyper-V)
  • Restored from backup after disk failure
  • initramfs-based boot system
