Why reconnection during a SMB cluster failover takes more time than expected, from a RHEL client?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • CIFS shares, mounted on RHEL client, takes time to recover during an SMB cluster failover.
  • The SMB servers are on a cluster, and a routine failover from the server side, causes this problem.
  • During the affected period, accessing the share from the client, results in a hang.
  • Typically, switching between windows nodes takes around a few seconds.
  • However, similar reconnection on a RHEL client, during failover, takes more than a couple of minutes.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
  • Microsoft Windows (SMB server)
  • CIFS
