Inventory Groups are now Workspaces

Updated -

We have renamed "Inventory Groups" to "Workspaces" to better reflect the expanded functionality you can expect from Red Hat Hybrid Cloud Console. Workspaces will soon include and allow you to organize other resources and assets, in addition to RHEL hosts and systems. This change is part of our ongoing commitment to provide you with a more powerful and flexible way to manage your assets securely with fine-grained access controls.

What to Expect:

You will now see the updated "Workspaces" terminology throughout the console anywhere you used to see “Inventory Groups”. The current functionality still remains and you can continue to use “Workspaces” in the same way you use “Inventory Groups” today. A new Workspace admin interface will be added to the Hybrid Cloud Console in the second half of 2024, which will provide additional administrative capabilities.

Why the Change?

While "Inventory Groups" served its purpose initially, the term no longer accurately reflects the growing capabilities of this feature, and has led in some cases to its misuse. "Workspaces" signifies a broader space to organize and manage a wider range of assets, including RHEL hosts, OpenShift Clusters, and more, which will be introduced in a future state.

A Note on System Tagging:

We understand that many of our customers have been utilizing inventory groups as a way to categorize, filter and report on their inventory, but did not leverage its user access management control capabilities. While this approach offers benefits, this was not the original intention of inventory groups (now workspaces). Workspaces are designed to group assets, and apply user access to those by binding them with user groups and roles.
For users who primarily use groups for searching and filtering capabilities without the need of user access control, we recommend using system tagging which is specifically designed for categorizing and filtering resources, offering a more streamlined and efficient approach across all services (e.g. filtering all applications at once using global filtering by tags).

We are confident that the transition to Workspaces will provide you with a more adaptable and efficient way to manage your resources. As always, we appreciate your feedback and are committed to continuously improving your experience.
