Oracle rac VIP inaccessible after failover

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

In an Oracle RAC environment, running on RHEL, failover of the VIP (floating cluster IP address) to another node will result in an inability to reach that IP (ping will fail, as will other connection attempts); this will typically be more of a problem when accessing the VIP from a different subnet (through a router), but could affect local communication (on the same subnet) at least temporarily too.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (any version)
  • Oracle RAC
  • specifically, this has been reported for (but it is expected other versions will behave the same):
Oracle RAC version - 11.2.0.3
RHEL 6.2
RHEL 5.10
