Getting error " Current configuration is not valid" while creating a custom authselect file.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After updating /etc/authselect/system-auth and /etc/authselect/password-auth files as per CIS hardening, getting an error as an invalid authselect file:
# authselect check
[error] [/etc/pam.d/system-auth] is not a symbolic link!
[error] [/etc/pam.d/system-auth] was not created by authselect!
[error] [/etc/pam.d/password-auth] is not a symbolic link!
[error] [/etc/pam.d/password-auth] was not created by authselect!
Current configuration is not valid. It was probably modified outside authselect.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
  • authselect
  • pam
