Performance Impact after restricting kernel resources
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Issue
- Performance impact after configuring some or any of the below options:
- Hugepage allocation
- Isolating CPUs
Resolution
- Ensure that the memory and CPU resources available to the kernel meet the minimum and/or recommended requirements for the version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux as outlined in Red Hat Enterprise Linux Technology Capabilities and Limits
Root Cause
The minimum/recommended requirements for Red Hat Enterprise Linux do not account for any limits or configurations placed on the system that would reduce those resources below the requirements of the kernel. If the available resources to the kernel are constrained below those minimum/recommended requirements it can lead to unexpected performance impacts.
Diagnostic Steps
Confirm if the resources available to the kernel meet or exceed the minimum/recommended requirements for the version of Red Hat Enterprise the system is running.
An example of the results of lack of appropriate resources on the system can be found in the following knowledgebase article;
