Podman login fails with the error "unsupported protocol scheme"

When try to connect to the private Automation Hub, via podman, fails with the error:
authenticating creds for "automation_hub.example.com": Get "automation_hub.example.com/token?account=admin&service=automation_hub.example.com": unsupported protocol scheme
