AMQ Streams -- what is required of the storage device?

The Streams documentation makes only passing reference to the characteristics required of a storage device (disk). It does say, for example:

"Block storage is required. File storage, such as NFS, does not work with Kafka."

However, the reasons for this statement are not entirely clear.
