Virtual Machines running Windows get very slow and/or write a lot of data to Storage when doing trim/discard/unmap/defragmentation operations

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Running defrag command causes a high cpu load
  • Runs for a very long time
  • Causes all the data to be rewritten again instead of just trimming the drive

Environment

  • Microsoft Windows Guests with virtio disks
  • Red Hat Virtualization 4.4
  • OpenShift Virtualization 4.11
  • Red Hat OpenStack Platform 17.0
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9
