`rpm -K <package>` command prints "rpmReadSignature failed: sigh data: BAD, no. of bytes(n) out of range" error message

Issue

  • When I run rpm -K <package> command for RHEL9 package on RHEL7 system, the following error occurs.
[root@rhel7 ~]# rpm -K gdbm-1.19-4.el9.i686.rpm 
error: gdbm-1.19-4.el9.i686.rpm: rpmReadSignature failed: sigh data: BAD, no. of  bytes(12787) out of range

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • rpm-4.11.3-45 or ealier
