Ansible on Azure Backup and Restore

Updated -

This article provides answers to common questions regarding the backup and restore policies and procedures for Ansible Automation Platform on Microsoft Azure.

Is Ansible Automation Platform on Azure Backed Up?

Ansible on Azure performs daily backups for data stored by the platform. These backups are used to provide a contingency against catastrophic failure of Azure resources to allow Red Hat’s SRE team to restore the platform to a running state. These backups are not for use in customer data requests (i.e. data roll-backs, etc.), but for use in platform restoration circumstances. Customers are responsible for creating their own content and configuration backups of Ansible Automation Platform. Red Hat recommends using the ansible.controller collection when implementing Ansible Automation Controller so that configuration-as-code practices allow for restoration of your environment in the event of a user or automation issue.

Do Customers Have Access to Backups?

No, customers do not have access to backups. Customers will be responsible for managing project backups through Git for automations and container registry(ies) for execution environments where they may want to prepare for user error or non-infrastructure issues.

Are Customer Configurations Maintained Between Upgrades?

The customer’s automations (projects, templates, etc.) and execution environments will be supported as per the capabilities of the underlying version of Ansible Automation Platform at any given time. As the platform matures, customers may need to update or upgrade execution environments or automations to address platform changes, security issues, etc. The Ansible team intends to communicate any potential customer action for an upgrade with ample time to plan for a given upgrade; what that announcement looks like in practice will depend on future changes to the Ansible Automation Platform.

Will customers be able to implement Azure Site Recovery Manager with the VMs used for Ansible Automation Platform on Microsoft Azure?

No, this will not be possible. Customers will not get access to manage the Ansible on Azure infrastructure in any capacity.
