Intermittent delays printing to remote LPD server

Issue

While printing from this server, we are seeing the "Connecting to printer..." status message for several minutes. For example, the output of "lpstat -p" is the following for several minutes:

# lpstat -p pr123
printer pr123 now printing pr123-11711769.  enabled since Tue 27 Sep 2022 06:39:13 PM CEST
        Connecting to printer...

After several minutes, the status changes to:

# lpstat -p pr123
printer pr123 is idle.  enabled since Tue 27 Sep 2022 06:40:53 PM CEST
        Data file sent successfully

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, all versions
  • Common Unix Printing System, all versions
  • Sending print jobs to a remote server/device via LPD (LIne Printer Daemon) protocol
