xinetd rejects connection requests on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • xinetd rejects connectin requests when the cps option is used in a service's xinetd configuration file. The log file records a message similar to:

    Dec 12 00:25:29 hostname1 xinetd[3067]: bind failed (Address already in use (errno = 98)). service = pop3

restarting xinetd (service xinetd restart) will clear the problem temporarily.

  • A service will be permanently disabled due to a bind failure that occurs when the service is restarted after being temporarily disabled because the service has hit it CPS limits.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.2
  • xinetd-2.3.14-10.el5-i386
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • xinetd-2.3.14-33.el6
