Service rsyslog does not generate logs

Issue

  • The rsyslog service will not update certain log files appropriately.

  • rsyslog does not generate logs inside files such as /var/log/messages , /var/log/cron, /var/log/secure.

  • The following error messages will be seen when systemctl status rsyslog is run:

rsyslogd[xxxx]: error during parsing file /etc/rsyslog.conf
rsyslogd[xxxx]: error during parsing file /etc/rsyslog.d/xxx.conf
rsyslogd[xxxx]: unknown priority name ""

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7, 8
  • rsyslog
